Osteoarthritis post #6 Prevention

The second ‘prevent OA strategy’ involves preventing sports injuries.
Are you a guy with a similar story?  “Yeah, we were tied with two minutes to go in the football game.   I caught the winning pass and carried that pigskin 40 yards for a touchdown.  Unfortunately, as I crossed the line, I was tackled and my ACL tore.  I was a hero for that day but years later I now carry the pain.”
What should parents know to protect their child athletes from injury?
A recent article from weightwatchers.com mentioned concerns that children are being injured when they specialize with one sport too early.  The repetitive injuries from playing only one sport can cause wear and tear in specific areas of the body.  This article can be found at http://www.weightwatchers.com/util/art/index_art.aspx?tabnum=1&art_id=109581
The Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons provide information about what equipment will help
prevent injuries and what can be done to protect athletes (by sport) at http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/menus/safety.cfm#sports_exercise
Another website dedicated to preventing injuries in children is Safe Kids USA at

Dr John Hardin, a rheumatologist and Chief Scientific Officer of the Arthritis Foundation sums it up this way:  “keys to preventing osteoarthritis include maintaining proper weight and preventing injury.”  This article can be found at http://www.arthritistoday.org/conditions/osteoarthritis/news-and-research/new-knee-study-2.php
