Can a person prevent osteoarthritis?
We cannot change some risk factors such as our genes and our age. We can work to keep our weight within a normal limit. If this was easy, most of us would be there. Millions of Americans struggle with the weight issue. (Remember I’m a weight watcher achiever, for the third time. See Feb 10, 2011 post.)
However, we do need to know that every extra lb of weight adds 4 lbs of pressure to our knees and 6 lbs of pressure to our hips. On the other side of the logic, if a person loses even 10 lbs the pressure on his hips and knees decreases and the risk of developing OA decreases.
