Some of you are wondering why I wrote a book about caregivers. My family (both sides) were caregivers for Mom, Dad and my mother-in-law for several years. Mom and Dad died at ages 88 (Mom ) and 91 (Dad) after several years of heart disease and failing health. David's Mom lived with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease for several years.
This book was borne from our families' experiences. The elderly folks got great care. Our family members worked together and yet, it was the toughest time we have lived through.
How can a caregiver take better care of himself? It begins with recognizing when you are a caregiver and making your own health and well-being a priority. Research shows that people who recognize they are a caregiver fare better. If you do not make yourself and your health a priority, you will wear out, burn out and get sick yourself. This book is full of information about caregiving.
