What is osteoporosis?

What is osteoporosis?  Osteoporosis is a weakening/thinning of the bones. If your doctor uses the word osteopenia, he is talking about a mild, early case of osteoporosis.  Osteopenia tells you that you need to be working with your doctor to improve your bone quality before you suffer fractures.
You may be wondering what healthy vs osteoporotic bone looks like.  Check out this slide show at Webmd.com http://www.webmd.com/osteoporosis/ss/slideshow-osteoporosis-overview  The healthy bone has a few small holes between the bony structure.  The picture on the right has lots of holes—in fact, you can see right through the holes.  That’s osteoporotic bone.  It’s not strong and can fracture much easier than healthy bone.  The most common places for osteoporotic fractures to occur are the spine and hip.
