People
undergoing cancer treatments may hear the doctors talk about neutropenia. What
is neutropenia? Neutropenia describes a
lowered white blood cell (WBC) count.
White blood cells circulate through our blood and fight infections. If you or your loved one hears the doctor say
your white blood cell count is low (neutropenia), you should be extra vigilant
to protect against infection. What can a
cancer patient do to protect himself/herself?
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides valuable information at http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/preventinfections/pdf/neutropenia.pdf Whether you are a patient, a family caregiver
or a medical professional, check out Three Steps for Preventing Infection
during Cancer Treatment at https://www.preventcancerinfections.org/
