Symptoms of type 2 diabetes

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes occur because of the high blood sugar levels.  When I was learning about diabetes, my instructors talked about these three major symptoms:   polydipsia (extreme thirst), polyuria (excessive urination) and polyphagia (extreme hunger).  When you understand what’s happening in the body, those symptoms make sense.  The high blood sugar levels affect the kidneys who work extra hard to rid the body of the high levels of sugar (which explains the polyuria or excess urination).  While doing this, the kidneys pull excess fluids from the body cells to dilute the high sugar content in the blood.  This causes dehydration and the person becomes very thirsty (polydipsia or extreme thirst).  Because insulin isn’t present or isn't being utilized, the glucose in the blood cannot enter body cells.  The cells go hungry and this causes the person to become hungry (polyphagia).  Other symptoms can include unusual weight loss, extreme fatigue and irritability.
