Easter baby chicks--how do you protect your family from germs they carry?

Those cute, fuzzy little poultry pets are adorable to play with.  Some people buy a baby chicken or duck for their kids as an Easter pet.  Did you know that these soft adorable critters may carry Salmonella germs and cause illness in your family?
It’s true.  Baby chicks and ducks may look healthy while carrying Salmonella on their bodies and feathers.  According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), live baby poultry can carry Salmonella and people become exposed by holding and cuddling the birds and touch bird cages, watering and food bowls.
Salmonella germs cause gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and/or abdominal cramps.  Prolonged symptoms can cause dehydration and, in extreme cases, the germ can become blood-borne and cause death.   Treatment of the Salmonella includes antibiotics and fluid replacement.
How can you protect your family from the Salmonella germ on baby chicks?  Suggestions from the CDC tomorrow.
