Peritoneal dialysis for kidney failure

Peritoneal dialysis is the second method of dialysis.  Peritoneal dialysis uses the blood vessels in the belly lining, peritoneum, to act as a filter.  The dialysis fluid is put into the belly via a special dialysis catheter.  The fluid stays in the catheter for the appropriate amount of time.   When the dialysis fluid drains into a sterile collection bag, it removes the waste products and excess fluid.  For more information on peritoneal dialysis, see http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/peritoneal-dialysis/MY00282
