Hemodialysis for kidney failure

There are two types of dialysis treatments.  Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are the two most common types of dialysis.  During hemodialysis, a machine does the cleaning and filtering.  A person’s blood is removed through an arterial IV access,  filtered through a dialysis machine which washes the waste products out of the blood and then the person’s blood is  returned through a venous IV access.   The hemodialysis process can take a few hours from a person’s day and this process must be done regularly.  Some people have hemodialysis treatments three times a week.  Others may have dialysis done daily.  More information about hemodialysis can be found at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hemodialysis/MY00281
