Cyclospora infection
Last time I talked about the recent cyclospora outbreak. What is cyclospora? Cyclospora is a parasite which causes illness. What symptoms does the cyclospora parasite cause? The symptoms do not begin immediately; on average, the symptoms begin a week after being infected. These symptoms can feel like the flu: low-grade fever, fatigue, nausea and vomiting and GI distress such as bloating, cramping, and watery diarrhea. Without treatment, the cyclospora infection can last for several weeks. Healthy people with strong immune systems may be able to fight off the infection. The cyclospora symptoms can reoccur: the person will get to feeling better only to become ill with symptoms again. But there is good news: cyclospora infection can be treated with the combination antibiotic trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX, brand names Bactrim, Septra or Cotrim.)
